Many people make resolutions to workout more as of the new year. However, what seems like a great idea often does not come to be a practical solution. Here are a few tips to keep you motivated and successful.

Set realistic goals.
  • Choose a time of day to workout that you are likely to keep and stick to it.
  • Find a form of exercise that you actually enjoy – and one that fits your lifestyle. If you dread doing cardio on a piece of stationary equipment, why not try a boxing or dance class?
  • Have your workout clothes in a bag ready to hit the gym after work.
  • Treat yourself (rewards help maintain momentum) as you reach a new benchmark (i.e.  run 3 miles, do 20 regular pushups, any goal you have set and reached). This will help chart your progress and motivate you to set and reach the next goal.

Whether you have been derailed from your program during the holidays, or you are simply starting out, don’t make this only about losing weight. Make 2010 about feeling good – and looking good will follow! The start of a new year is a great time to set new personal goals – just make sure you set yourself up for success – with reasonable expectations.

I would love to hear from you – be sure to share any tips that have helped you succeed. Happy New Year! May it be a healthy one for each of you.
